Description
Maida is a refined wheat flour made by milling wheat grains and removing the bran and germ, leaving behind the starchy endosperm. It has a fine, white texture and is widely used in Indian and international cuisines for preparing items such as chapatis, parottas, puff pastries, cakes, biscuits, breads, noodles, and deep-fried snacks like samosas and puris.
Because of its high gluten content, Maida provides elasticity and structure, making it ideal for baking and dough-based recipes. However, it is low in fiber and nutrients compared to whole wheat flour, as the refining process removes much of the grain’s natural nutrition.
Despite being less nutritious than whole grain flours, Maida remains popular due to its smooth texture, versatility, and desirable baking properties. It should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
